On our last full day in Fort Cochin, we thought we would try the breakfast in TPot. It's been a while since I had a waffle and Henri wanted pancakes. It's funny how ordinary things like that can be so missed, especially since 98% of the places we've tried served their IDEA of French crepes, not yummy, fluffy pancakes.
Then we walked to the south of the islet, and it wasn't long before hunger struck again. We were luckily in the vicinity of Kayee's, a place well known for its biryani.
But a few meters later, it got so hot that we just had to have ice cream; the funny thing is that the owner insisted that we eat it in his air conditioned room. Brrr!
Look at the painted billboard outside!
The Dutch Palace, which was more like a house. There were nice murals and wonderful carved ceilings.
Around the corner was the spice shop area. Full of touts, beware!!!
And then the synagogue.
There was an entrance fee and a dress code so we didn't go in. Later in the trip we met a Jewish woman who asked us what it was like (because she wanted to spend Hannukkah near the synagogue). I said we didn't go because I felt it was wrong to pay to go inside the house of God, but she said for Jews, that's a good thing! :)
After having our fill of Jew Town, back up North we went.
The road was under repair. Both men and women were laying in the gravel and pouring the tar. Hooray for equal opportunity!
That evening we had one of the best meals we've had in India. It was our last night in Fort Cochin so we tried Shala, which had the exact same chocolate cake as Kashi... what do you know, they're owned by the same family! The food is prepared by local women and it was good, good soul food. Just like having our mommies cook for us.
After dinner, Henri wanted a chai and we wandered into Salt N' Pepper area, a group of restaurants that serve expensive seafood. There was a waiter who smelled strongly of alcohol who thought he was cool and tried to do magic tricks with my scarf but pulled a thread from it instead. Boo.
And then suddenly, it was December 14th, and off to the backwaters of Thuravoor.
After 2 bus rides we were in Thuravoor and a rickshaw picked us up for our boatride.
Next up: You And I Boat :)
